How to Grow and Care for Beautyberry in Pots

The Beautyberry (also known as *Callicarpa*) is a total showstopper, and the good news is that it does surprisingly well in pots and containers! If you want those stunning purple berries on your patio, there are just a few simple tricks to keep your plant happy and thriving.

Finding the Perfect Spot for Your Container

Just like in the wild, a potted Beautyberry loves a sunny to partially shaded spot. You’ll also want to make sure it’s tucked away from harsh drafts or heavy gusts of wind. Some of my favorite places to show them off are:

  • Right on the balcony or back deck
  • Framing a front entryway

Keep It Outdoors

Even though it’s in a pot, the Beautyberry isn’t really a houseplant. It usually can’t get enough sunlight indoors to produce those iconic berries. However, if you have a bright sunroom or a conservatory with floor-to-ceiling windows, it might just feel right at home there.

The Best Soil for Pots

To keep your Beautyberry feeling its best, you’ll want to use a potting mix that is:

  • Rich in nutrients but low in lime
  • Well-draining (this is key!)
  • Neutral to slightly acidic in pH

Caring for Your Potted Beautyberry

Potted plants dry out faster than those in the ground, so give your Beautyberry a drink regularly. You want the soil to stay consistently moist, but never soggy—nobody likes “wet feet” or root rot! Feed it about two or three times a year with a standard multi-purpose fertilizer. If your shrub starts looking a little wild or loses its shape, don’t be afraid to give it a light trim to tidy things up.

Winter Protection

When the temperature drops, your potted Beautyberry needs a little extra TLC. The safest bet is to move it into a cool, frost-free spot indoors or into a sunroom. If you’re keeping it outside, make sure to prep it for the chill: place the pot on a wooden board or a piece of Styrofoam to insulate it from the frozen ground. You should also wrap the pot and the plant in garden fleece or a burlap sack to keep it cozy until spring.

A Quick Safety Note

While those berries look like bright little candies, they are actually toxic and definitely not for snacking. If you have curious kiddos or pets running around, make sure to place your Beautyberry somewhere out of their reach.
