The Best Temperature for Your Dragon Tree: A Complete Care Guide

The Dragon Tree (Dracaena) is easily one of the most popular houseplants out there, and for good reason! Not only does it look stunning, but it’s also earned a reputation for being incredibly low-maintenance. However, “easy-care” doesn’t mean “no care.” If you want your Dracaena to truly thrive, you need to get the environment right—and temperature is a huge piece of that puzzle.

Where the Dragon Tree Calls Home

To understand what this plant needs, we have to look at its roots. The Dragon Tree hails from subtropical and tropical regions. To keep it happy in your living room, you want to mimic its natural habitat as closely as possible. Keep these four factors in mind:

  • The right temperature range
  • Protection from harsh, direct sunlight
  • Keeping it out of drafty spots
  • Maintaining ideal humidity levels

Finding the “Goldilocks” Temperature

Because of its tropical heritage, the Dragon Tree craves consistency. It’s happiest when the thermometer stays between 65°F and 77°F (18-25°C). If temperatures consistently dip below 60°F (15°C), your plant is going to start struggling. On the flip side, you don’t want it getting toasted, either.

Avoid placing your Dracaena right next to a fireplace or a blasting heater. These heat sources can dry out the plant faster than you’d think. Speaking of drying out, humidity is key! Unless you’re keeping your plant in a steamy bathroom, indoor air can get pretty dry. I recommend giving your plant a regular misting with water to recreate those humid, tropical vibes it loves so much.

Can It Go Outside?

While your Dragon Tree might enjoy a summer vacation on the balcony, it absolutely must come inside for the winter. Start keeping a close eye on the weather forecast as late summer winds down. Even early autumn nights can get chilly enough to damage the leaves. It’s always better to bring it inside a little too early than a little too late!

When spring rolls around and you’re ready to move it back outside, take it slow. Just like us, plants can get “sunburned” if they aren’t acclimated to the direct sun gradually.

The Bottom Line: Keep It Balanced

When it comes to temperature, the Dragon Tree is all about balance. It doesn’t want to freeze, but it doesn’t want to bake, either—think of the mild, breezy climate of Tenerife. If you can nail the temperature and keep things steady, you’ll be well on your way to growing a tall, healthy, and impressive statement plant.
