Believe it or not, your houseplants can actually help you catch some better Z’s! Beyond just looking pretty on your nightstand, certain plants work overtime to purify the air while you snooze. We’ve rounded up the seven most popular plants for the bedroom, plus we’re sharing our favorite “insider tip” for a great night’s sleep.

++Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum floribundum)
The Peace Lily is a total powerhouse when it comes to filtering out indoor toxins like benzene and formaldehyde. Plus, those gorgeous 8-inch leaves release quite a bit of moisture, which helps boost the humidity in your bedroom—perfect if you struggle with dry air. With its elegant white blooms, this plant prefers bright, indirect light and actually enjoys the cooler temperatures typically found in a bedroom.
++Yucca Cane (Yucca elephantipes, Yucca aloides)
Even though it looks like a palm tree, the Yucca is actually a member of the asparagus family! With its sword-shaped, dark green leaves growing in a radial pattern, this low-maintenance Yucca brings a tropical vibe to your bedroom. The leaves start out growing straight up and eventually arch gracefully downward. As the plant grows, the lower leaves naturally dry up and fall off, giving it that classic, tall woody trunk look.
++Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
The Spider Plant is widely considered the absolute best houseplant for improving indoor air quality. A famous NASA study showed that this easy-going plant can neutralize up to 90% of formaldehyde and benzene in a room. It does this using special enzymes in its leaves that turn chemicals into sugars and oxygen. To keep yours happy, place it in a bright spot with indirect sun and keep the soil consistently moist.
++Dragon Tree (Dracaena marginata)
The Dragon Tree is another air-purifying champ that’s perfect for the bedroom. Between its uniquely shaped trunk and its fun “tuft” of leaves, it’s a real eye-catcher. Depending on the variety, the glossy leaves can be solid green, striped, or variegated. Since Dracaenas love bright light (but hate direct scorching sun) and handle cooler room temps well, they feel right at home next to your bed.
++Golden Pothos (Epipremnum pinnatum)
Pothos is a lush, fast-growing vine that looks amazing trailing down from a hanging basket or climbing up a trellis. It’s a fantastic bedroom companion because it’s known for scrubbing pollutants out of the air. This “unkillable” plant has leathery, heart-shaped leaves and is very forgiving if your bedroom doesn’t get a ton of natural light.
++Snake Plant (Sansevieria)
If you don’t exactly have a “green thumb,” this is the plant for you. The Snake Plant is incredibly hardy. What makes it special for the bedroom is that it actually releases oxygen and absorbs CO2 at night—the opposite of most plants! Some even say it helps with headaches and high blood pressure. Its striking, upright leaves can grow up to 5 feet tall in a bright spot, making a bold architectural statement.
++Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is famous for its healing gel, but it’s also a great sleep aid. Like the Snake Plant, it pumps out oxygen during the night to freshen up your space. It loves the cooler temperatures of a bedroom during the winter. In the summer, if you like to sleep with the windows open, you can even move your Aloe out to a sunny balcony or patio to soak up the heat.
%%Our Secret Tip: Jade Plant (Crassula ovata)
Jade plants have a super cool metabolic trick called Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM). Basically, these succulents only open their “pores” at night to prevent water loss. During those nighttime hours, the Jade plant absorbs CO2 and releases fresh oxygen right while you’re dreaming. If you go easy on the watering, a Jade plant can eventually grow into a stunning, tree-like specimen over three feet tall!
