How to Prune Your Christmas Cactus for Healthier Growth

In der Regel muss der Kaktus gar nicht geschnitten werden.

For the most part, you can just let your orchid cactus (Epiphyllum) do its thing without ever picking up a pair of shears. However, there are a few times when giving it a little trim is actually a great idea. Whether you’re looking to tidy things up or grow your collection, here’s the lowdown on when and how to prune your cactus.

When should you prune an orchid cactus?

  • To deadhead spent flowers
  • To keep its size in check
  • To remove diseased or damaged stems
  • To take cuttings for propagation

Deadheading spent blooms

Once those gorgeous flowers start to wither, they actually drain energy from the plant as it tries to maintain them or produce seeds. To help your cactus focus its strength on new growth, it’s best to snip off wilted blooms right away. In some cases, a quick cleanup can even encourage the plant to put out a second flush of flowers, so you can enjoy that color for a little longer!

Keeping your cactus under control

Orchid cacti are famous for those long, trailing stems, but sometimes they can get a bit *too* enthusiastic and take over your space. If your plant is getting unruly, feel free to trim back any overly long branches that are dragging on the floor. You should also prune away any stems that look dried out or shriveled. While you can technically prune anytime, it’s best to avoid doing it during the winter dormancy period. Stick to the warmer months when the plant is actively growing, and always use a sharp, sterilized knife to ensure a clean cut.

Taking cuttings for new plants

If you want to propagate your orchid cactus, cuttings are the way to go! Look for a healthy, vibrant stem and take your cutting during the summer when the plant is full of sap and energy. Again, make sure your knife is sharp and clean to prevent any infections at the cut site.

Once you’ve taken your cutting, let it sit out for about a day so the “wound” can callus over. Then, grab a pot filled with a mix of potting soil and a little sand for drainage. Stick the cutting into the soil, give it a good drink of water, and place it in a warm, bright spot. With a little patience, it’ll grow roots and you’ll have a brand-new cactus to add to your jungle!
