The Schefflera—or the Umbrella Tree, as we often call it—is a seriously impressive houseplant. Not only does it look great, but it’s also a powerhouse at cleaning the air in your home. Of course, it’s only a showstopper as long as it keeps those iconic, fan-like leaves. Those “spokes” are exactly why it earned its nickname!

Why is my Schefflera dropping leaves?

It can be a real heartbreaker when your Umbrella Tree suddenly starts dropping leaves. If you’ve picked a good spot for it, the culprit might be diseases or pesky bugs. However, more often than not, it comes down to a hiccup in your fertilizing or watering routine. And hey, sometimes it’s just getting older!

Common reasons for sudden leaf drop:

  • Dry soil
  • Root rot
  • Pests
  • Not enough light or nutrients
  • Direct, scorching sun or excessive heat
  • Cold drafts
  • Natural aging

Can I still save my Schefflera?

If your plant hasn’t lost too many leaves yet, there’s a very good chance you can turn things around. First, double-check its “real estate.” Is it getting plenty of bright, indirect light and warmth without being baked by the sun? Is it shielded from chilly drafts? If the location is perfect, check the soil—it should be moist, but never soggy.

If the soil is bone dry, give it a good drink immediately; you can even try bottom-watering by soaking the pot in a basin. Just make sure to let any excess water drain away. Check the saucer or decorative pot a few minutes later and dump out any standing water. On the flip side, if the soil is soaking wet, you need to act fast and swap it out. Repotting is a must here to prevent or stop root rot.

What should I do about root rot?

If you notice mushy, brown, or smelly roots while you’re repotting, grab your shears and trim them off—be generous with your cuts to ensure you’re only leaving healthy tissue. If the rot is advanced, you’ll definitely know it by that tell-tale “swampy” smell.

How do I keep my Schefflera happy?

During the summer, aim to water your Umbrella Tree about once a week. If the soil dries out faster than that, you might need to water a bit more often. The goal is to keep the soil damp, not drenched. If it stays too wet, those roots will start to rot before you know it.

Pro Tip: When you nail the right location and a solid care routine, your Schefflera will rarely drop a leaf!
