7 Best Flowering Hedges for a Beautiful Backyard

Flowering currant hedge with drooping deep pink-red flower clusters along a garden path

Flowering hedges are a total game-changer for your backyard. They give you all the privacy of a traditional fence but with the added bonus of stunning colors and textures. If you’re looking to swap a boring green wall for something with a bit more personality, these plants are some of my absolute favorites.

++Red Flowering Currant (Ribes sanguineum)
Red Flowering Currant
The Red Flowering Currant is a fantastic choice for a natural-looking hedge. As you might have guessed from the name, it produces clusters of vibrant, deep red flowers that really pop. It blooms from April through May, giving your garden a gorgeous wake-up call in the spring. Plus, bees and hummingbirds absolutely love it! It can reach about eight feet tall, so it’s great for screening. Just make sure to plant it in a sunny spot so it can really show off.

++Bridal Wreath Spirea (Spiraea x arguta)
Bridal Wreath Spirea
If you want a hedge that looks like a literal waterfall of flowers, go with the Bridal Wreath Spirea. From April to May, this shrub is absolutely covered in tiny white blossoms. Not only does it look like a fairytale, but it also has a delicate, sweet scent that drifts through the yard. It loves the sun—the more light it gets, the more flowers you’ll see. It usually tops out around six or seven feet. Pro tip: mix some compost into the soil to give it the nutrients it needs to really take off.

++Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus)
Rose of Sharon
The Rose of Sharon is perfect if you want a lot of options. It comes in so many different colors—pinks, purples, whites—so you can pick the vibe that fits your style. Unlike many spring bloomers, this hibiscus starts its show in June and keeps going all the way until October. It’s a late-summer lifesaver for local pollinators, providing a steady food source when other flowers might be fading.

++Forsythia (Forsythia)
Forsythia
Looking for an early bird? Forsythia is usually the first sign that spring has officially arrived. Starting in March, these shrubs explode into a wall of bright, neon yellow. They grow fast and thick, making them an excellent privacy screen. Forsythia is incredibly hardy and low-maintenance, so it’s perfect for gardeners who want big results without a ton of work. Give it a sunny home and watch it glow!

++Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas)
Cornelian Cherry
The Cornelian Cherry is a real overachiever. It often starts blooming as early as February, bringing tiny yellow flowers to a garden that’s usually still looking pretty gray. But the perks don’t stop there—it produces edible red fruits that birds love, and the leaves turn a stunning color in the fall. This one can get quite large, reaching 20 feet or more if you let it, so it’s a great choice for a serious privacy border.

++Chinese Lilac (Syringa x chinensis)
Chinese Lilac
Who doesn’t love the smell of lilacs? While many people plant them as standalone shrubs, the Chinese Lilac is actually perfect for hedging. It has a bushier, wider growth habit than the common lilac, which helps it fill in those gaps quickly. The branches have a lovely arching shape that gives your hedge a soft, elegant look while still providing plenty of coverage.

++Hydrangea (Hydrangea)
Hydrangea
Hydrangeas make for a lush, leafy hedge with massive flower heads that look great all summer long. They’re also the ultimate “DIY” plant—depending on your soil’s pH level, you can actually change the color of the blooms from pink to blue! They have huge green leaves that provide a solid screen, and the flowers are perfect for cutting and bringing indoors for bouquets.

%%Sweet Mock Orange (Philadelphus coronarius)
Sweet Mock Orange
If you want your garden to smell like a dream, Sweet Mock Orange is my “secret weapon” recommendation. It blooms in May and June with beautiful white flowers that have an incredible, citrus-like fragrance. When you plant Mock Orange as a hedge, you aren’t just getting a privacy screen—you’re creating an amazing sensory experience for your entire outdoor space.
