When you’re strolling through the neighborhood in May and the lilacs are in full bloom, it’s hard to resist the urge to bring that magical fragrance indoors. Theoretically, you totally can! Here’s everything you need to know about keeping lilacs in your home.
Do lilacs actually last in a vase?
It’s a common frustration: you bring a beautiful bouquet of lilacs inside, and they wilt almost immediately. Most people try it once and give up. Honestly, it’s a bummer to see those sweet-smelling blooms end up in the trash after just two days—usually, you’re better off just enjoying them on the bush in the garden.
However, there are a few tips and tricks to make your cut lilacs last much longer. It all comes down to the time of day you cut them, how you prep the stems, and where you place them in your house. You can find all the details in our guide here: How to make lilacs last in a vase.
If you follow those steps, you can enjoy your bouquet for up to a week. Not only do they look stunning, but they’ll fill your home with that iconic spring scent. I recommend placing them on a dining table or a side table in the living room. Avoid sunny windowsills or spots near a heater, as the heat will make them fade fast. You might want to skip the bedroom (the scent can be a bit overwhelming while you sleep) and the bathroom (it’s usually too humid).
A quick heads-up: Lilacs, kids, and pets
If you have curious toddlers or pets, you’ll want to be careful. Those pretty flowers can be tempting to nibble on, but keep in mind that all parts of the lilac plant are mildly toxic and definitely not edible. They can be dangerous if ingested by children or animals. Make sure to place your vase on a high shelf out of reach. Of course, if you have cats or birds who can get anywhere, you’ll need to be extra vigilant!
One last thing: you can’t actually grow a lilac bush as a permanent houseplant. These beauties need fresh air, direct sunlight, and the natural change of the seasons to thrive. While you can grow them in large pots, they really belong outside on a balcony, patio, or in the garden.
