In their native Mexico, they spend pretty much all day soaking up intense, direct sunlight. Keeping that “home sweet home” vibe in mind is the secret to picking the perfect spot for them in your garden or on your balcony.
The Sunnier, the Better
If there’s one thing zinnias crave, it’s Vitamin D. You’ll want to plant them in a spot that gets full sun for most of the day. Since they can be a little delicate, try to find a nook that’s also shielded from harsh winds so they don’t get knocked around.
Low-Maintenance Soil
The good news? Zinnias aren’t exactly divas when it comes to their dirt. Back in Mexico, they’re used to growing in pretty sparse, rocky soil. However, if you want those show-stopping, vibrant blooms we all love, it’s worth giving them a little boost. They’ll perform their best in soil that is rich in organic matter (humus) and, most importantly, drains well. Nobody likes soggy feet!
