Typically, Angel Trumpets show off their spectacular blooms between June and October. However, if you’ve got one of the varieties native to the Andes, you might see those first flowers popping up as early as May!
Big, Bold, and Beautiful
There’s a reason Angel Trumpets are such a favorite for patio gardens. Not only do they pump out an incredible number of flowers all season long, but the size of those blooms is just jaw-dropping. The trumpet-shaped bells—which, of course, give the plant its name—can grow up to 12 inches long. Trust me, when an Angel Trumpet is in full bloom, it’s a total showstopper.
A Rainbow of Options
Depending on which variety you choose, you aren’t just limited to one look. While their blooming schedules might vary slightly, the color palette is where they really shine. You can find them in gorgeous shades like:
- Sunny Yellow
- Classic White
- Soft Pink
- Vibrant Orange
Keep ‘Em Hydrated
If you want those massive flowers to appear, you’ve got to keep your plant thirsty! Angel Trumpets need a lot of moisture to produce blooms. Regular watering is non-negotiable; if the soil stays too dry, the plant simply won’t flower. This is mostly because those huge blossoms have a lot of surface area, meaning they lose water through evaporation very quickly.
Don’t Skimp on the Nutrients
Growing those giant, plentiful flowers takes a ton of energy. Since these exotic beauties are usually grown in containers here, they rely entirely on you for “food.” To keep them happy, I recommend a two-pronged approach to fertilizing: mix a slow-release fertilizer into the potting soil and follow up with regular liquid feedings throughout the growing season.
Easy on the Pruning
When it’s time to prep your plant for its winter home, you’ll definitely need to prune it back. But here’s a pro tip: be gentle! If you get too aggressive and cut back all the flowering wood, the plant won’t be able to set new buds next season. You want to trim it just enough to fit indoors without sacrificing next year’s floral display.
