Depending on which variety you pick, lavender bloom times can vary quite a bit. Some early birds start popping as early as May, while others take their sweet time to show off. If you’re planning your garden layout, here’s a quick guide to when you can expect those iconic purple blooms.
Lavender Blooms Can Transform an Entire Landscape
There’s really nothing like a lavender field in full bloom. Between that incredible, relaxing scent and the sea of purple stretching to the horizon, it’s pure magic. In fact, people travel from all over the world to places like Provence in the South of France just to catch a glimpse (and a photo!) of the peak season.
Bloom Times for Different Varieties
If you’re looking for the first signs of purple, Spanish Lavender (*Lavandula stoechas*) is usually the leader of the pack. It typically starts blooming between mid-May and early June. One of the best things about Spanish Lavender is its staying power—it’s known for a particularly long flowering season, which makes it a huge favorite for home gardeners.
By June, English Lavender (*Lavandula angustifolia*) usually joins the party. In the wild, this variety loves hilly or mountainous terrain and handles higher altitudes like a champ. Shortly after the English varieties wake up, you’ll start seeing blooms on Spike Lavender.
Last but not least is Lavandin. This is the hybrid variety you’ll see in those famous postcard shots of Provence. While France is famous for it, you’ll also find these stunning fields across Greece and Tuscany.
When Does Lavender Bloom in Our Neck of the Woods?
Here in the States, the exact timing depends on your local climate. Since many of our regions are a bit cooler than the Mediterranean, the bloom cycle often shifts a little later. Generally, you can expect your lavender to start showing off around mid-June, with some varieties waiting until July to really hit their stride.
What Your Lavender Needs to Thrive:
- Sandy or chalky soil
- Well-draining, dry earth
- Plenty of direct sunlight
- No “wet feet” (avoid standing water!)
Aside from the weather, the quality of your soil plays a huge role in how well your plants flower. If you give them the right conditions, your lavender will reward you with a spectacular show every summer!
