How Fast Does Lavender Grow? Growth Rate and Expectations

Lavender is technically a subshrub, which means it stays relatively compact rather than towering over your garden. That said, the final height of your plant really depends on which variety you pick and where you decide to plant it. If you’re planning your garden layout, here’s a quick guide to help you figure out how much space you’ll need.

What to Expect from Lavender Growth

Lavender grows in a bushy, mounded shape. This means you’ll need to give it a bit of “elbow room” horizontally. Since most varieties don’t get incredibly tall, it’s a fantastic choice even for smaller yards or patio gardens. Depending on the cultivar, you’ll see quite a range in height.

Varieties and Their Typical Heights:

  • Low-growing Lavender: Blue Scent, Dwarf Blue, Peter Pan (about 8 to 12 inches)
  • Medium-height Lavender: Hidcote, Miss Katherine (about 15 to 24 inches)
  • Tall Lavender: Hidcote Giant, Grosso, Imperial Gem (about 24 to 32 inches)

There are about 30 different species of lavender out there, but generally, you can expect most garden varieties to land somewhere between 12 and 28 inches tall. Just keep in mind that height isn’t the only difference—flower colors vary, and not every type is winter-hardy. Also, if you’re looking for something for culinary use, stick with English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia). Keep these factors in mind when you’re shopping at the nursery!

Tips for Optimal Growth

Lavender is a bit of a “tough love” plant—it actually prefers lean, dry soil. To reach its full potential, it also needs plenty of direct sunlight. Avoid planting it in the shade or even partial shade if you want it to thrive. When planted in the ground in a sunny spot with the right conditions, lavender will easily reach its full size.

If you’re growing lavender in pots, things are a little different. Because the roots are restricted and can’t forage for nutrients as easily as they would in the ground, container-grown lavender usually stays a bit smaller. Just something to keep in mind if you’re looking for that big, bushy hedge look!
