If you’re the lucky owner of a mirabelle plum tree, you know there’s nothing quite like picking those sweet, golden fruits right off the branch. But knowing exactly when they’re ready for the basket can be a bit of a guessing game. The harvest window depends on a few different things, and with a little TLC, you can actually help your tree produce a better crop.
When is Mirabelle Plum Season?
Generally speaking, mirabelle plums are ready to harvest in August and September. That’s when most gardeners here can expect a bountiful haul. However, the exact timing isn’t set in stone—it really comes down to four main factors:
- The specific variety
- The weather
- Where the tree is planted
- How well it’s cared for
Timing Your Harvest by Variety
The type of mirabelle tree you have is the biggest clue for your harvest schedule. As a rule of thumb, the later a variety blooms, the later the fruit will ripen. For example, the “Miragrande” variety blooms a bit later in the spring, so you won’t be picking those plums until September. On the flip side, some early-blooming varieties can be ready to go as early as June!
The Impact of Weather, Location, and Care
Mother Nature definitely has a say in the matter. If you’ve had a chilly, rainy spring, don’t be surprised if your harvest is delayed by a week or two. Location matters, too. If you’re in a warmer, southern climate, your plums will likely ripen about two weeks earlier than they would in cooler, northern regions.
Don’t underestimate the power of proper pruning, either. If you want a heavy, early harvest, your tree needs a good thinning out of the canopy. Without it, the blossoms and fruit won’t get enough sunlight or airflow, which slows down the whole ripening process.
