The Canna Lily originally made its way from the West Indies to Europe, and it’s easy to see why—gardeners fell head over heels for its tropical flair and stunning color palette.
What Do the Blooms Look Like?
Canna flowers are real showstoppers with a very distinct look. Here’s what you’ll usually see:
- Solid or bicolor patterns
- A gorgeous range of yellows and reds (white is pretty rare, but out there!)
- Three petals
- Three sepals
- One to five stamens
How to Keep the Blooms Coming
Typically, the blooming season for Cannas kicks off in June and keeps going strong until the first frost hits. The secret to a long-lasting display? Deadheading! If you snap off those faded flowers quickly, the plant will keep putting its energy into new blooms.
If you’re impatient for those first flowers (like I am!), you can actually jumpstart the season. By starting your Cannas indoors before the weather warms up, you’ll get a serious head start on that tropical color.
