Kamille findet man oft auf Feldern am Wald.

German Chamomile is easily one of the most popular and time-tested medicinal herbs we have. This hardy little annual is a real survivor—you’ll find it growing everywhere from the sunny Mediterranean coasts of North Africa to the breezy plains of Northern Europe. But while it’s tough, it definitely has a “happy place” where it truly thrives:

The Best Spot for Chamomile: Soaking Up the Sun

When it comes to soil, chamomile isn’t exactly a diva. It can handle rocky, poor ground that other plants might turn their noses up at. The one thing it absolutely insists on, though, is a warm, sunny, and sheltered spot where it can spread its wings (and its roots) undisturbed.

In the wild, you’ll often spot chamomile hanging out along field edges, meadows, roadsides, and even in vacant lots or parks. In the garden, it makes a fantastic companion plant or a charming border for your flower beds. Since it loves the sun so much, it pairs perfectly in a “mixed culture” garden with these sun-loving neighbors:

  • Leeks
  • Onions
  • Cabbage
  • Potatoes
  • Kohlrabi
  • Radishes
  • Nasturtiums

The Ideal Soil

Even though chamomile is low-maintenance, it does appreciate soil that is loose and well-draining. If your garden soil is a bit heavy or compacted, don’t worry! You can easily fix that by mixing some standard potting soil with a bit of sand before you plant your chamomile.

Another pro-tip: this healing herb loves lime. It grows fastest and stays healthiest in lime-rich soil, so adding a little lime to your garden bed is a great idea if your soil is lacking. It prefers a pH range from slightly acidic to alkaline (somewhere between 6.5 and 8). While it likes a drink of water now and then, it’s definitely “allergic” to soggy feet—so make sure that water can drain away!

By the way, if you do decide to boost your soil with lime, just make sure its garden neighbors are also fans of (or at least okay with) lime-rich conditions. Happy planting!
