Gerberas are absolute superstars in the garden, and it’s all thanks to those incredibly vibrant, eye-catching blooms. If you want to keep that color explosion going all season long, there’s one simple trick you can’t skip: regular deadheading.
No Snip, No Show
When you stay on top of your Gerbera care, these beauties will reward you with fresh flowers all through the warm months. While they definitely need their fair share of water and nutrients, removing old, faded blooms is the real secret to success. By clearing out the “spent” flowers, you’re telling the plant to stop wasting energy on old growth and start focusing on brand-new buds.
Boosting Those Blooms
When it’s time to trim your Gerbera, don’t just snip the head off. You’ll want to cut the stem down low, leaving no more than about an inch (three centimeters) remaining. It’s also super important to use a sharp, clean pair of garden shears or a knife. Using dirty tools is a quick way to introduce rot or bacteria to the plant, which is the last thing we want!
To keep your Gerberas happy and blooming, just follow these quick steps:
- Remove faded flowers as soon as they start to wither.
- Cut the stem deep down near the base.
- Always use clean, sterilized tools.
