Since they’re originally from the tropics, Gerberas aren’t exactly fans of the cold. To keep them happy, they’ll need to spend their winters indoors. However, these beauties absolutely thrive outside during the summer months! As long as you give them a little TLC, they’ll reward you with some stunning blooms.

Wait for the Warmth

There isn’t a set date on the calendar for moving your Gerberas outside. The main rule of thumb is to wait until temperatures are consistently hitting at least 60°F (16°C) and the nights aren’t dipping too low. In most areas, it’s best to wait until after the last frost in May before letting them move out for the season.

Sunny but Sheltered

Finding the perfect spot is key. Your Gerberas want a place that is bright and protected from the wind. You’ll want a location with good airflow, but try to avoid harsh, direct midday sun which can be a bit much for them. A sheltered spot that gets plenty of morning and evening sun is usually the “sweet spot.”

Keep the Moisture Just Right

Gerberas can be a little picky when it comes to maintenance, especially regarding water. They love consistent moisture—not too dry, but definitely not soggy. Be sure to avoid standing water at all costs, as that’s a quick way to end up with root rot.

Don’t Forget the Nutrients

If you want your Gerberas to really show off, you’ve got to feed them well. When planting in pots, always go for a high-quality potting soil. If you’re putting them in a garden bed, mixing in some mature compost will do wonders. On top of that, give them a boost with a liquid fertilizer mixed into their water every two weeks.

To keep your outdoor Gerberas happy, just remember:

  • Pick a bright, wind-protected spot.
  • Use well-draining soil and keep it consistently moist.
  • Provide plenty of nutrients with regular fertilizing.
