How to Find the Perfect Spot for Your Calathea

Calathea steht gerne etwas dunkel.

The Calathea, often called the Prayer Plant or Zebra Plant, isn’t exactly what I’d call a “set it and forget it” houseplant. She can be a bit of a diva! But if you want her to thrive, it all comes down to location. Since these beauties originate from the rainforests of Brazil, you need to mimic those tropical vibes at home. Get the spot right, and you’ll be enjoying those stunning leaves for years to come.

What Makes a Great Spot?

  • Low light to partial shade
  • No direct midday sun
  • High humidity
  • Consistent room temperatures
  • Protected from drafts

If you’re planning to put your Calathea on a windowsill, aim for an east- or north-facing window. They can handle a little morning or evening sun, but that harsh afternoon light is a no-go. Interestingly, these plants are actually quite happy in darker corners, too. Just keep an eye on the thermometer—make sure the temperature doesn’t drop below 65°F (18°C), as Calatheas really don’t handle the cold well for long.

Bring on the Rainforest Humidity

Back home in Brazil, the air is thick and moist. To keep your Calathea happy in your living room, you’ve got to recreate that moisture.

Ideally, you’re looking for about 80% humidity. I recommend giving the leaves a quick misting with water every day. A bright bathroom is also a fantastic spot since the steam from the shower keeps the air nice and humid. You can also set up a pebble tray with water nearby to help boost the moisture levels in the air.

How to Get Your Calathea to Bloom

If your Calathea is being shy about flowering, she might just need a little “beauty sleep.” To encourage blooms, try giving her a dark phase during the winter for a few weeks. Find a spot where she’ll be in total darkness for more than twelve hours a day. This little trick mimics her natural cycle; once you move her back into a brighter spot, she should be ready to show off some flowers.
