The beautiful blooms of the Paulownia are definitely worth the wait, but you’ll need a little patience! You can usually expect your tree to start showing off its flowers once it’s about six years old. When that time finally comes, though, the display is absolutely stunning. Here is everything you need to know about the Empress Tree’s blooming season.
When does the Empress Tree bloom?
The main event happens between April and May. However, if you want to take good care of your tree, you need to know that the magic starts much earlier. Most trees actually begin forming their flower buds way back in the fall. These buds grow slowly through the winter, getting ready to burst into color once spring arrives.
Because those buds are already sitting there during the colder months, you have to be extra careful if you decide to do any autumn pruning. Make sure you don’t cut back your tree too aggressively, or you might accidentally snip off next year’s flowers! Treat those little buds with care, and your Paulownia will reward you with a spectacular show.
Quick facts about the flowers:
- Bloom time: April to May
- Flower shape: Large, upright clusters (panicles) about 15 inches long
- Colors: Ranging from soft blue and violet to pink or white
Keeping your Paulownia happy and healthy
Winter care is key to a successful spring bloom. Since those flower buds are formed in the fall, they can be a bit sensitive to extreme cold. If the temperature drops too low, the buds might freeze, meaning you’ll miss out on flowers for that season. Luckily, with the right winter protection, your tree should do just fine—especially since our winters have been a bit milder lately.
Gardeners aren’t the only ones who have fallen in love with these blooms over the years. The Empress Tree was famously the favorite of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, and even German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer was a big fan. By planting one in your own backyard, you’re in pretty distinguished company! Plus, by keeping an eye on its yearly growth and pruning it to the right height, you can keep this fast-growing beauty looking perfect for your space.
