There’s no need to keep buying pre-grown cat grass from the pet store! You can easily grow it yourself from seeds right at home. It’s a fast grower and provides your indoor kitty with the essential nutrients they need. Here’s my guide on how to plant and care for your own batch of cat grass.

How to Plant Your Cat Grass the Right Way

When it comes to cat grass, you actually have plenty of options for the types of seeds you use. While various sweet grasses and sedges are popular, many cat parents swear by Umbrella Papyrus, oats, or wheat. The main thing is to make sure your cat has access to fresh, young shoots—that’s where the good stuff is that helps their digestion.

Before you get planting, give your seeds a little head start. You don’t need to worry about “chilling” them; just soak the seeds in a bowl of water for a few hours. While they’re soaking, grab a pot and fill it with some high-quality, nutrient-rich potting soil.

Once the seeds are ready, tuck them into the soil about an inch deep. These seeds aren’t big fans of light when they’re trying to germinate, so keeping them covered is key. Place the pot in a bright spot with plenty of indirect sunlight. Avoid putting them directly in a scorching window, or the soil will dry out way too fast.

Caring for Your Cat Grass

Once those cat grass seeds are in the dirt, they’ll sprout up quickly in a warm home. If your house is a bit humid, they’ll grow even faster! Just remember to water the pot regularly. You want the soil moist, but be careful not to overdo it—cat grass doesn’t like “wet feet” (standing water), which can lead to root rot.

A few pro-tips to keep in mind:

  • Don’t overcrowd the pot with too many seeds.
  • Give the grass a little trim every now and then to keep it fresh.
  • Keep an eye out to make sure no mold is forming at the base of the grass.

While you can certainly grow cat grass outdoors, indoor cats really need a steady supply throughout the winter months. You can grow it in a classic decorative pot or even a wide, shallow tray to create a lush “green carpet” for your pet. Either way, it’s a win-win: your cat gets a healthy snack, and you get a beautiful pop of greenery in your home!
