Who doesn’t love the taste of fresh fruit and veggies straight from the backyard? The reality is, though, not all of us have a massive plot of land to work with. But here’s the good news: even if you’re short on space, you can still live your orchard dreams!
Tips for Growing Fruit in Containers
Most fruit tree varieties can be grown as “columnar” trees—those tall, skinny beauties that grow straight up. But just because a tree has a slim profile doesn’t automatically mean it’ll be happy in a pot forever. When you’re shopping around, make sure to check exactly how tall the variety is expected to get.
Size matters when it comes to the pot, too. You’ll want to start with a container that holds at least 8 to 10 gallons (about 30 to 40 liters). Keep in mind that your little tree will need a fresh home about every five years. By then, it’ll have used up all the nutrients in the soil, making it the perfect time to upgrade to a slightly larger pot with some fresh dirt.
Finding the Perfect Spot
If you’re growing fruit in a container, think “sun-drenched.” Your tree needs plenty of light and warmth to produce a heavy harvest of sweet, fully ripened fruit. Another pro-tip? Try to find a spot that’s tucked away from harsh winds.
When it comes to the soil, your trees will be happiest if the mix is:
- Loose and airy,
- Well-draining,
- Rich in nutrients, and
- Protected from “wet feet” (no standing water!).
