In the scientific world, Hens and Chicks are known as *Sempervivum*. That Latin name literally translates to “always living,” and honestly, it couldn’t be more accurate. These little succulents are so low-maintenance that they’ll thrive in spots where most other plants would give up in a heartbeat. Because they’re such tough cookies, the creative planting possibilities are pretty much endless!
In the Rock Garden
The most common way to show off Hens and Chicks is in a rock garden. Since these plants need very little soil to survive, you don’t just have to tuck them between rocks—you can actually plant them directly onto larger stones. Whether you nestle them into a natural hollow on a rock or squeeze them into a tight crevice, they’ll usually settle in quickly and start spreading, eventually blanketing your rock garden in a beautiful, textured carpet.
On the Roof
If you want to go old-school, try planting them on a roof. Historically, these plants were often called “Houseleeks” because people used to grow them right on their rooftops. Back in the day, folks believed they could protect a home from lightning strikes and fires! Even if you don’t have a shed or an old cottage roof to cover, you can still get that classic look by planting them on a single vintage roof tile and placing it decoratively in your garden bed.
Working with Wood and Found Objects
Maybe you found a stunning piece of driftwood on your last beach trip, or perhaps you had to take down a tree and are left with a cool-looking stump. These are perfect homes for Hens and Chicks! You only need a tiny bit of soil and a small nook or cranny to get them started. I’ve even seen them growing out of large seashells or snail shells. The sky is really the limit here. The only “must-haves” for your chosen location are:
- Plenty of bright sunshine
- Excellent drainage (they hate “wet feet” or standing water!)
