The question of whether wax plants (Hoya) are toxic isn’t a simple “yes” or “no.” There are over a hundred different species out there, and in the wild, you’ll find them everywhere from Southern China and Japan to Australia. Because there’s so much variety, their toxicity levels can vary quite a bit too.
Better Safe Than Sorry with Kids and Pets
Since we can’t give a 100% guarantee that every wax plant variety is non-toxic, you’ll want to think twice before bringing one into a home with curious toddlers or pets. It’s also worth noting that these beauties can be pretty high-maintenance when it comes to care and upkeep.
When in Doubt, Go for a Safe Alternative
If you’re worried about safety, your best bet is to choose a plant that is proven to be non-toxic. There are plenty of gorgeous, worry-free options for your living room that look just as great. Here are a few of my favorites:
- Spider Plant
- Lemon Tree
- Jasmine
