Ever heard of “interspecific” fruits? These are those cool hybrids where fruits like apricots and plums get a little makeover. Whether they’re a clever creation from a breeder or a happy accident of nature, these “plumcots” are becoming a huge hit in home orchards.

The Different Apricot-Plum Hybrids

You’ll find a few different varieties at nurseries these days that have become real favorites among gardeners. Here are the big ones you should know:

  • Biricoccolo
  • Pluots
  • Apriums

The Biricoccolo is a super popular hybrid. It’s a cross between an apricot and a cherry plum, and let me tell you—it is incredibly sweet and juicy. One of the best things about this variety is how hardy it is; it handles cold winters like a champ, making it a great choice for various climates.

Then we have Pluots, which were actually developed right here in the USA back in the 20th century. They usually have that classic plum coloring and smooth skin. Fun fact: Pluots are actually a complex mix that can include apricots, plums, peaches, and nectarines!

Apriums, on the other hand, come from very intricate breeding but lean much more toward their apricot (or marilla) heritage in terms of look and flavor.

Growing Your Own Plum-Apricot Hybrids

The best part about these hybrid fruits? You get the juiciness of a plum combined with the honey-like sweetness of an apricot. Plus, the trees usually top out at around ten feet tall, so they’re perfect if you’re working with a smaller backyard space.

When you’re ready to plant, look for a spot that gets full sun to partial shade. These trees love nutrient-rich soil, so try to avoid areas that are too sandy. Keep the soil nice and moist, and give your tree a little love every year after harvest by fertilizing with compost—this ensures you’ll have a great crop the following season.

Once you get your tree in the ground, you can usually expect your first harvest by the third year. You’ll be rewarded with gorgeous, deep red fruits that taste absolutely amazing!
