Originally hailing from the tropical regions of East Asia and Australia, the Hoya (or Wax Plant) isn’t exactly built for chilly outdoor climates. However, even as an indoor houseplant, it can be a little picky when it comes to getting through the winter months.
Keep it Cool
The most important thing to remember is that your Hoya needs a solid “rest period” during the cold season. To make this happen, you’ve got to find a spot that isn’t too warm. If you keep it in a room that’s toasty year-round, you might find that your plant refuses to bloom come spring.
Skip the Fertilizer
Once the flowering wraps up in October, it’s time to put the fertilizer away. Beyond cutting back on the nutrients, here are a few more care tips to keep your Hoya happy until spring:
- Make sure it gets plenty of bright, indirect light.
- Keep a close eye on the soil; water sparingly just to ensure it doesn’t completely dry out.
- Give it a nice misting once a week using lime-free or filtered water.
