Even though the Peace Lily (botanical name *Spathiphyllum*) is pretty low-maintenance, it still needs a little TLC to really thrive. Along with regular watering, giving your plant a nutritional boost is key to keeping it happy.
What kind of fertilizer should I use?
The good news is that Peace Lilies aren’t super picky about their food. However, I’d recommend choosing a fertilizer specifically formulated for flowering houseplants over a standard all-purpose one. Why? Because some general fertilizers are heavy on nitrogen, which might leave you with a ton of green leaves but no flowers. A bloom-boosting fertilizer helps ensure those iconic white spathes keep popping up.
How often should I fertilize?
How often you feed your Peace Lily depends on the type of fertilizer you use and when you last repotted it. Fresh potting soil is usually packed with nutrients, so your houseplant might not need any extra food for anywhere from a few weeks to several months after moving into a new pot.
When it comes to the type of fertilizer, you’ve generally got two choices: slow-release or liquid.
Slow-release fertilizers usually come in the form of sticks or spikes that you push into the soil. These release nutrients gradually over time, typically lasting between two and three months depending on the brand.
Standard liquid fertilizer is mixed right into your watering can. To keep your Peace Lily looking its best, you should aim to feed it:
- Every two
- to four weeks
Here’s the rule of thumb: as long as your plant is happy with its location, regular feeding will lead to lush growth. Just be careful not to overdo it! Don’t fertilize more than once every 14 days. Over-fertilizing can actually damage the roots and, in the worst-case scenario, kill your plant.
Signs of nutrient deficiency
If you notice your Peace Lily is developing yellow leaves, it might be crying out for more nutrients. If that’s the case, try getting on a consistent fertilizing schedule. It should help the plant bounce back and start growing vigorously again.
When is the best time to fertilize?
No matter which type of fertilizer you prefer, you should only feed your Peace Lily between March and October. During the winter months, the plant goes into a rest phase. You want to let it chill out rather than forcing new growth with extra nutrients. If you’re using slow-release spikes, just keep an eye on the calendar so you don’t accidentally give it a boost right as it’s trying to go dormant!
