Thuja (Arborvitae) isn’t just for privacy hedges! These versatile evergreens are actually perfect for topiary. A spiral-cut Thuja adds a sophisticated, playful touch to any garden landscape, and honestly, it’s much easier to pull off than you might think.
How to Sculpt Your Arborvitae into a Spiral
Sure, you could try to freehand it, but if you want that professional look, using a guide is the way to go. This topiary technique is much more successful when you have the right tools on hand. Here’s what you’ll need:
- String or twine
- A template (optional)
- Garden shears
- A small hand saw
Pro tip: Always clean your tools before and after use to avoid spreading any plant diseases around your yard. You can buy pre-made wire templates at most garden centers, or just DIY one with some sturdy wire. Stick to manual garden shears and a small saw; power tools are tricky for this kind of precision work and can easily lead to a “haircut” gone wrong.
To start your spiral, either place your template over the tree or tie a piece of string to the very top. Wrap the string around the tree in a downward spiral pattern. Once you’re happy with the spacing, simply cut along the line of the string. As you work your way inward toward the trunk, make your cuts shallower. For the very top, you can finish it off with a classic cone or even a cute globe shape. Just be careful not to cut back into the “old wood” (the brown, leafless interior), as Arborvitae won’t grow back from those spots.
When and How Often Should You Trim?
Arborvitae are pretty hardy and handle pruning well. Unlike a standard hedge, you can technically shape them year-round, but April is usually the sweet spot for a major topiary session. You can then do a quick “touch-up” in late June or late August to trim back any stray shoots that have popped out.
Try to pick a cloudy but dry day for your pruning. Direct sunlight can scorch fresh cuts, leading to those dreaded brown tips. On the flip side, you want to avoid pruning in the rain, as high moisture can invite fungal issues.
