We all love those sunny, warm days in the garden, but let’s be real—lack of rain can be a major headache for organic gardeners. And it’s not just during those mid-summer heatwaves that your plants need a drink. Keeping your garden hydrated is a bit of an art form. Here’s everything you need to know about keeping your water game on point.
Just Planted? Don’t Forget the Hose!
Freshly planted trees are like newborns—they need a little extra TLC. Depending on the season, how much rain you’ve been getting, and your soil type, they’re going to need some supplemental watering. Even if you planted your tree in the fall when things are cooler, don’t make the mistake of thinking you can just “set it and forget it.” It still needs you!
How Much Water is Enough?
When it’s time to grab the watering can, aim for about 3 to 5 gallons (10–20 liters) per tree each time you water. Here’s a pro tip: it’s much better to give your tree a deep soak every once in a while than a light sprinkle every day. Deep watering encourages those roots to reach down into the soil rather than staying near the surface. After about three or four years, your tree’s root system should be established enough to handle things on its own, unless it’s scorching hot outside. Just keep in mind that if you have sandy, light soil, you’ll still need to keep a closer eye on things.
Pro Tips for Smart Watering
- Mulch is your best friend: Cover the soil around your tree with mulch (like dried grass clippings) or compost. This acts like a blanket, locking in moisture and stopping those pesky weeds from popping up.
- Add some “living mulch”: If you want to add a pop of color, try sowing some marigolds or nasturtiums around the base of the tree. It looks great and helps the soil!
- Aim for the edges: Don’t pour water right against the trunk. Instead, water toward the outer edge of the “root zone.” That’s where the tiny feeder roots are located, and they’re the ones doing the heavy lifting when it comes to drinking up water.
- Beat the drought: During long dry spells, make sure you’re watering at least two to three times a week.
- Watch out for puddles: You want moist soil, not a swamp. Standing water can lead to nasty issues like fungal infections.
- Potted plants need more love: Remember, apple trees in containers dry out much faster and use up nutrients quicker than trees planted directly in the ground, so keep a close eye on them!
