Creating a little privacy in your outdoor space can be a real challenge for many homeowners. It’s even trickier for those of us with balconies, since we can’t exactly wait years for a massive hedge to grow in a pot. So, you might be wondering: is Pampas grass a good alternative for balcony privacy?
Not Every Balcony is a Match
When it comes to growing Pampas grass on a balcony, there are a few deal-breakers to consider. The most important factor is the location of your plant. As the name suggests, Pampas grass is native to South America, which means it’s a total sun-worshipper. It craves heat and bright light. If your balcony isn’t south-facing, it probably won’t get the sunshine it needs to thrive.
Give It Some Elbow Room
Another thing to keep in mind is that Pampas grass is a fast grower. While it won’t get quite as massive in a container as it would in the ground, it still has a huge appetite for nutrients. This is especially true if you want to see those iconic fluffy plumes in late summer and early fall. To keep it happy, it needs plenty of soil to draw from. This means you’ll need a pretty large planter, which is why Pampas grass is usually best suited for larger balconies rather than tiny fire escapes. Along with a big pot, you’ll also need to stay on top of a regular fertilizing schedule.
Avoid “Soggy Feet”
While Pampas grass can’t get enough sun, it absolutely hates sitting in too much water. Creating the right drainage is key to keeping it alive. You want a soil mix that breathes, so I recommend adding a drainage layer of gravel or broken terracotta shards at the bottom of the pot and mixing some sand into your potting soil. Also, make sure your container has a drainage hole so excess water can escape.
Ideally, your balcony planter should check these boxes:
- A capacity of at least 10 gallons (40 liters)
- Drainage holes in the bottom
- A saucer to catch any runoff and keep your balcony clean
