The Venus Flytrap is one of the coolest carnivorous plants out there. Originally hailing from the hot, boggy wetlands of the Carolinas right here in the U.S., these little guys love conditions that are bright, sunny, and damp. When you’re picking out a spot for your new green roommate, you’ll want to mimic that Southern swamp vibe as closely as possible.
Quick Guide to the Perfect Spot
- Bright light
- Full sun
- Warm temperatures
- High humidity
- Consistently moist soil
Venus Flytraps can be a bit picky about their environment. They absolutely crave light; generally, the more sun they get, the faster and stronger they’ll grow. Humidity is another big factor—think “sweltering summer day in the South.” One thing to keep in mind: they really don’t like sudden temperature swings, so consistency is key if you want them to thrive.
Finding the Sunniest Spot
As a rule of thumb, you want a location that stays bright all year round. During the active growing season in the spring and summer, your plant needs plenty of direct sunlight to really show off. Once things cool down in the fall and winter, the Venus Flytrap goes into a bit of a rest phase and can handle slightly lower light levels than it requires in the summer.
Getting the Temperature and Humidity Right
If you’re keeping your Venus Flytrap in a pot, the sweet spot for temperature is usually between 70°F and 90°F (20 to 32°C). Just try to keep things steady, as they can get stressed if the thermometer bounces around too much. They also love high humidity—ideally between 60% and 80%.
You can definitely move your Venus Flytrap outside during the summer, especially when those hot days hit. Just be sure to “harden them off” by introducing them to the outdoor sun gradually so they don’t get scorched. Some growers swear by keeping their plants in a terrarium because it’s much easier to lock in that high humidity. However, be careful with terrariums—they can sometimes get too cold at night or overheat in the sun, and we want to avoid those big temperature jumps!
