Artichokes are such a cool addition to any backyard—they’re a unique mix of a gourmet veggie and a stunning ornamental plant. Not only do they taste amazing, but if you let them bloom, they produce these gorgeous, vibrant blue flowers that really make a garden pop. If you want yours to truly thrive, there are a few key things to keep in mind when picking the perfect spot.
The Ideal Growing Conditions
When you find the right home for your artichoke, it can actually live for up to five years! First things first: these plants are sun-worshippers. You’ll want to plant them in a warm, sunny spot that’s tucked away from harsh winds. Since artichokes are deep-rooted plants, they need soil that is loose and well-draining, but also packed with nutrients and organic compost.
If you’re planning to grow your artichokes from scratch, I recommend starting the seeds indoors on a sunny windowsill. They germinate best when it’s nice and toasty—ideally between 70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the weather warms up in mid-to-late May, you can move your little seedlings outside. Just be sure to give them plenty of elbow room; they need at least 2 feet (about 60 centimeters) of space between each plant to grow their best!
