Since the clematis is a climbing plant, it’s going to need a sturdy trellis or support to really thrive. Because they like to spread their wings, you’ll want to be pretty generous with the spacing between each plant. Keep in mind that different varieties grow at different speeds and reach different sizes, so that will definitely play a role in how far apart you space them.
Recommended Spacing for Popular Varieties
There are a few fan-favorite clematis types that do exceptionally well in home gardens. To give them enough room to breathe and grow, here are the recommended spacing guidelines:
- Italian Clematis (Clematis viticella): 2 to 3 feet apart
- Alpine Clematis (Clematis alpina): 1.5 to 2.5 feet apart
- Traveler’s Joy (Clematis vitalba): 6.5 to 13 feet apart (this one is a vigorous grower!)
- Anemone Clematis (Clematis montana): 3 to 5 feet apart
If you’re planning on container gardening, a large 13-gallon (50-liter) pot can comfortably house two to three plants.
