To keep it happy, you’ll need to balance a few things: it loves partial shade, craves nutrient-rich soil, and wants its “feet” kept moist but never soggy. It sounds like a lot, but once you get the location right, these beauties really take off!
Aim for Partial Shade
In the wild, clematis usually grows along the edges of forests or in sunny clearings. This gives us a great clue about what they like: a cool, shaded base with plenty of sunlight for the flowers up top. If you don’t have a naturally shady nook in your garden, don’t worry! You can easily create that “cool root” environment by using companion plants like low-growing perennials to shade the bottom of the vine.
