One of the best things about lupines is just how low-maintenance they are. These hardy perennials aren’t picky about nutrients and can even punch through tough, compacted soil if they have to. Sun-Kissed and Sheltered
If you can, pick the sunniest spot in your yard for your lupines. While they’ll tolerate a bit of partial shade, they really do their best work when they aren’t competing with shadows. Aim for at least three hours of direct sunlight a day as a bare minimum. It’s also a good idea to find a spot that’s protected from heavy winds—those tall blooms can act like sails—but still has enough airflow to keep the plants happy.
The Perfect Soil
As I mentioned, lupines are tough enough to handle hard ground in your garden, but they’ll grow much more vigorously in loose, well-draining soil. A pro tip? Mix a little sand into your planting area to help break things up. This improves drainage, which is key because lupines absolutely hate “wet feet.” Keeping the soil airy prevents water from pooling around the roots and causing rot.
Give Them Some Elbow Room
To make sure your perennials have space to spread out and establish a strong root system, don’t crowd them when planting. A good rule of thumb is to leave about 20 inches (half a meter) between each plant. This doesn’t just give them room to grow; it also ensures plenty of air circulation, which is your best defense against garden headaches like powdery mildew or viral infections.
